Chillpak Hollywood Hour – Year 19 Episode 27

After almost 19 years of “changing the way you listen to the internet”, your friends in podcasting are about to change the way they continue to … change the way you listen to the internet! They discuss their plans on this week’s absolutely excellent show. Dean discusses a big improv performance he gave this weekend and goes deep into explaining the improv game “crime endowment”. In the long-awaited return of “Celebrity Deaths”, iconic rock guitarist Ace Frehley, and all-time great actress Diane Keaton get remembered. During those celebrations, Dean and Phil take a detour into a deep dive analysis of people dying from falls. A little-known 1973 film about the JFK assassination gets discussed, as does whether we can ever truly know history in general, and JFK assassination history in particular. Finally a rather terrible documentary about beloved actor John Candy gets reviewed.

Chillpak Hollywood Hour – Year 19 Episode 26

After a cold open wherein Phil sets the stage, the show gets started in mid-conversation as frequent contributor Jon Lawlor shares some of his thoughts about Aziz Ansari’s Good Fortune. The topic then turns to Paul Thomas Anderson’s 2002 film Punch-Drunk Love with particular emphasis paid to the way Anderson used music while shooting the film. This leads to Dean explaining the ways on-set music would be used in the silent film era, and how something called “click tracks” would be used in animation. In 2022 the great actor Stellan Skarsgard suffered a stroke and yet has been able to continue acting. The ways this has been achieved get discussed. The current heist picture The Mastermind from master filmmaker Kelly Reichardt is foremost in Phil’s thoughts, specifically why, despite universal critical praise, the film is being mostly hated by moviegoers, most of whom have seen it in multiplexes. Phil also shares with Dean and Jon the new set of questions he asks himself, and answers in writing, each night before bed.

Chillpak Hollywood Hour – Year 19 Episode 13

Dean Haglund turned 60 this past week and on the occasion, Phil Leirness and (friend of show and composer of numerous themes songs) Jon Lawlor met up with Dean via Zoom to discuss the importance of celebrating birthdays. They also celebrated the incredible life and hilarious artistry of the great Tom Lehrer. This led into a discussion of the gents’ all time biggest comedy influences. Finally, they discussed the fact that two of the films hailed as the best of 2025 both deal with recovery from sexual trauma and why that might make sense for where we are as a culture right now. Afterwards, Lily Holleman joined the festivities to go in-depth with Phil about one of those two films.

Chillpak Hollywood Hour – Year 19 Episode 3

It’s Memorial Day in the USA. Dean Haglund in Michigan and Phil Leirness in California are joined by Jon Lawlor in New Jersey to discuss New Jersey Transit, the importance of celebrating everyone, and the challenges involved when someone you meet or care about is experiencing memory loss issues. May is also Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month in the USA. To celebrate this, Phil sits down for an in-depth personal interview with a giant of the AAPI community, and a legendary actress who made her mark on stage, on screen, and in voice work. Takayo Fischer has worked in huge movies, with legendary stars, has been a fixture on television for decades, has lent her voice to many animated programs, and has worked on iconic stage projects with major talents of the 20th and 21st Century. The story of how she got to the stage is unlike any other.

Happy 2023, everybody! Dean and Phil get the year off to a good start by regaling each other (and you) with their respective holiday week road trip adventures. Dean drove all the way back to Detroit and Phil explored the two-lane back roads of Maryland, Pennsylvania and New Jersey, as well as the mean streets of the Big Apple. Because it’s “in with the new”, your friends in broadcasting and podcasting will reveal their resolutions for 2023. They will also say goodbye to a couple of notables who left us in December 2022, including a key David Lynch collaborator, the “Hollywood Cat” and an editor with whom Phil was working. Chillpak Hollywood Hour – Season 2 Episode 67

This week’s toe-tapping, funny bone-tickling, mind-expanding, Atlantic Ocean-crossing epic installment gets started with perhaps the most pleasant surprise surrounding today’s Oscar nominations. From there, it’s onto an amazing email from loyal listener Maurice Terenzio, who instead of focusing on “Celebrity Deaths” inspires Dean and Phil to celebrate the final four performers of the silent era who are still alive! After that, Dean and Phil welcome good friend and intrepid investigative journalist Mark Bennett to discuss his health travails of the last year, Oak Island and Nazi UFOs! In fact, Mark has launched a very cool crowd-sourcing campaign for his proposed documentary Nazi Flying Saucers: Hunting Hitler’s Secret UFOs. The second half of the show is a check-in with Jon Lawlor, who has provided many Chillpak Hollywood Hour theme songs thru the years, as well as the awesome theme song to The Truth Is Out There, and who first lent his vocal talents to a Phil Leirness-directed project in 2002! Jon reveals the hardest part of pandemic life for him, discusses living with depression, describes the changes he would like to see as we emerge from pandemic and discusses his new music. All that, plus he joins Dean in playing the latest round of the vintage movie ad game!
